A Floor Buffer – What is it?

The humble polisher has for decades quietly proceeded with doing its work, and although it has seen itself misrepresented in many cartoons and entertainment shows, it remains one of the most used and valued machines when it comes to floor maintenance. But what exactly is a floor buffer, and what is its use? Floor buffers are electrical machines used in the process on cleaning, maintaining and polishing floors. There are numerous models and manufacturing companies out there the most well known being: Eagle, Hawk, Kent Euroclean, Oreck, Onyx NuSource, and Sanitaire.

To really understand what a floor polisher is one has to know its purpose and reason for design. Floor polishers were initially developed to assist with the time consuming and often back breaking work involved with cleaning and finishing floors to a high gloss.
Prior to the invention of the floor polisher it could take one almost a full day to strip clean and polish a floor (only to have others walk over it and ruin your hard work). Because of this and the fact that many of the operators were and are today are undereducated the controls of the floor buffer were kept simple often only limited to an on switch and a speed control leaver. However today there are various larger and combination machines found that require skilled operators to function them. These have been designed to cut down on the human labor requirements that cleaning companies or larger corporations require to clean premises. Many of the newer smaller models found today can be used both for daily cleaning, scrubbing and buffing of ones’ floors, thus maintaining that high gloss with little effort. These machines now also come with an array of different pads allowing you to clean almost any non-carpeted surface.

Floor buffers are available in various makes and models, and the selection of one will largely depend on the surface type and size one would need to clean and buff, as well as ones’ budget. Floor buffers range from $500 to thousands of dollars each
Floor buffers are an essential part to floor maintenance. Used mostly to scrub, strip or buff tiled or solid floors. A floor buffer can also be used to clean and care for most wooden floors.

Options To Consider With Different Types Of Floor Buffers

Undoubtedly one of the best pieces of equipment to clean and shine a floor is a floor buffer. Because of it's unique design, a buffer has a soft pad-like material that cleans gently, removing dirt easily while shining the floor at the same time.

Let's list some of the rules you'll want to follow and the quality you'll want to look for in finding a great floor cleaning machine. Determine what the appropriate cleaning agents are for buffering. It's a known face that often liquid cleaning agents are applied to the floor just before the buffering takes place.

The agent will mix in with the dirt and grime on the floor, in preparation for buffering and making the process much easier for the buffer unit to shine and clean. Pay attention to what kind of rotary brushes are used, and what the maintenance is for them. What are the controls like on the unit? Check them out and the steering handle as well. Make sure they are great quality and won't break easily.

How does the direction control and speed adjustment work on the floor buffer? Make sure you understand fully before purchasing the unit. What size of cleaning unit will you really need? How fast? Buffers come in many shapes and sizes, so think about how much floor space you will need to be cleaning and budget this appropriately. Of course commercial floor buffers are quite large, and can cover much bigger floor areas in one run. They also can be used to strip floors, but these are only the most heavy duty buffers and are industrial sized and strength. Remember that buffers can be quite powerful, able to not only clean up the dirt in a given area, but also remove wax or deep-set stains.  I think they're fantastic at cleaning laminate floors especially.

If you are a home user, don't worry there are small versions available for you as well. These home buffers have lower speed controls and don't usually include the ability to strip floors. For home owners, using the right cleaning agent is essential in achieving the best cleaning rate and getting the most shine. Of course, the price is lower than commercial buffers. Home floor buffers are great for small areas too, like kitchen corners, hallways and even small bathrooms.  And if you need to clean your carpets check out carpet steam cleaning machines
